The preview
Madrid arrive… ahead in the head-to-head after beating Inter 2-1 at the Bernabéu on matchday one, but with the treatment room full again in the worst possible area: the defence. Éder Militão is back training with the group but does not travel — he will also miss Sevilla — and Rodrygo, Raúl Asencio and Ferland Mendy are out too. The good news: Ibrahima Konaté and Fede Valverde are available, Kylian Mbappé is fit to start, and Vinícius can play in Europe: his sending-off against Villarreal only affects LaLiga. And watch this milestone if he plays: Mbappé could reach 100 Champions League appearances in Rome, and would be the youngest player in history to do so.
Roma arrive… with one point (1-1 away to Fenerbahçe) and two absences that really hurt: captain Bryan Cristante, out with knee inflammation, and none other than first-choice goalkeeper Mile Svilar, injured this week; Pierluigi Gollini, who impressed at Como, will be in goal. On the plus side for Gasperini’s side, Donyell Malen is available — his weekend red card was in the league and carries no European ban. And the Olimpico is a fortress: Roma have won 8 of their last 9 Champions League home games.
The history is white: Madrid have won the last four meetings with Roma without conceding a goal, 8 of the 12 meetings overall, and 5 of their 6 visits to the Olimpico. Referee François Letexier will take charge of his seventh Champions League match involving Real Madrid.
Probable lineup: Courtois – Trent (or Carvajal), Konaté, Rüdiger, Carreras – Tchouaméni, Valverde, Güler – Bellingham – Vinícius, Mbappé. (Lineup according to the press; the official one comes an hour before kick-off.)
The key: withstand the Olimpico’s early push without giving anything away at the back. Without Cristante and Svilar, Roma lose their midfield anchor and their safety net in goal: if Madrid press high and strike first, the game swings their way; if they let themselves be pinned back, the night in Rome could get very long.
Your prediction? Leave it in the comments: do Madrid win at the Olimpico despite the absences, or do Roma defend their fortress?
