The preview
El Clásico arrives with Barça as unbeaten league leaders: 27 points from 27 after winning 2-5 at Betis on 17 October. Atlético are second on 22 and Real Madrid third on 21. Madrid are six points back: defeat would make it nine; a win would cut it to three.
Madrid arrive flying after tonight’s 4-1 over RB Leipzig in the Champions League: Bernardo Silva (44′), Arda Güler (52′), Mbappé (83′) and Diomandé (87′) sealed 9 from 9 in Europe, with Gomis (85′) scoring for the Germans. No new injuries for Sunday: only Carreras saw yellow, and that does not carry into LaLiga. Barça, for their part, suffered their first defeat of the season on Tuesday: 4-2 to PSG in Paris, a result that changes nothing in the league table.
The big absence is Vinícius Jr: he is suspended for El Clásico. His four-match league ban (Sevilla, Clásico, Racing and Valencia) is definitive after the appeal was rejected. Rodrygo and Raúl Asencio remain long-term absentees, with a return estimated for early 2027. Mendy trains but lacks rhythm: he does not count as available. The good news is Militão, who already reappeared in the final minutes against Sevilla and will have managed minutes. And Diomandé has strengthened his case to start on the left, Vinícius’s position: a goal and an assist coming off the bench against Leipzig. Mbappé is also in form: a goal and an assist against Leipzig.
Barça arrive wounded from Paris: Dani Olmo is out, injured in his left adductor against PSG (around a month out, per the club’s official statement). The defence is a question mark after the Betis-PSG week: Eric García and Christensen are out, Koundé is a serious doubt with his ankle and Roony Bardghji is also out (per Superdeporte, 21 October). Gerard Martín is available. Lamine Yamal played and scored in Paris.
Six points behind and without Vinícius: Madrid visit the unbeaten leaders without their best dribbler, closing an eight-day week with Sevilla, Leipzig and El Clásico. The leaders arrive wounded from Paris, without Olmo and with a makeshift defence.
