Real Madrid claimed the first Clásico of the season at the Spotify Camp Nou (1-2) thanks to a Kylian Mbappé brace and a masterclass in game management. The Frenchman put Madrid ahead on 41 minutes, Raphinha levelled on 61, and just when a draw seemed inevitable, Mbappé struck again on 87 to silence the stadium. It is a double prize: Barcelona stay on nine straight wins and do not surpass the start made by Miguel Muñoz’s Real Madrid, while Mourinho’s side cut the gap at the top to just three points.
A serious Madrid, without Vinícius or Courtois
Madrid arrived at Camp Nou without the suspended Vinícius and without Courtois, with Lunin in goal. Far from shrinking, the visitors set up with discipline, conceded the ball (38% possession) and waited for their moment. Barça controlled the play but not the boxes: Raphinha tried from distance and Lunin dealt comfortably with Gordon. The home side’s bad news came on 29 minutes, when Xavi Espart went off injured, replaced by Balde.
Madrid’s goal, on 41 minutes, carried a slice of luck: Diomandé’s cross was cleared by Gerard Martín and the ball struck Mbappé, who was lurking in the area, and ended up in the net. A poacher’s goal, even if it came off a deflection: being there is a merit too.
Raphinha levels and Lunin keeps Madrid alive
Barcelona threw everything forward after the break. Bellingham wasted a two-on-one that could have made it 0-2 and, on 61 minutes, Raphinha made it 1-1, finishing inside the box from Pedri’s pass after a quickly taken corner. Camp Nou roared and Madrid suffered: on 66 minutes Lunin clawed a Gerard Martín header off the line that was already being celebrated as a goal. That save is worth half a Clásico.
The final blow: Mbappé on 87
Mourinho turned to his bench (Dumfries for Valverde, Camavinga for Bernardo Silva) and the change proved decisive. On 87 minutes, Bellingham slipped past Gabriel Jesus and backheeled the ball into Camavinga’s path; the Frenchman won it in the box and squared for Mbappé to finish right-footed for 1-2 and his brace. Barcelona, with Gabriel Jesus and Adeyemi already on, had no time to respond.
The run stops at nine
Barcelona came into the game with a perfect record: nine wins from nine in LaLiga. A tenth would have started to threaten the best start in history, the eleven straight wins with which Miguel Muñoz’s Real Madrid opened the 1968-69 league season. Well: the record remains white. Barça stay on nine, and Madrid move within three points of the leaders (27 to 24) heading into November. The title race is very much alive.
